CyberLink PowerCinema 7.0 Concepts

CyberLink PowerCinema 6 is an all-in-one digital media center, delivering a complete entertainment solution for the digital home. It's what we called a "10-foot" product because you would view it on TV while sitting on your couch (apprx. 10 feet away from your TV).

The Transition from 6.0

With the launch of CyberLink PowerCinema 6, UI design was entering a "dark" era with most companies and products going for a darker theme instead of the traditional white or lighter backgrounds. This also marks the beginning of "touch" right after the original iPhone and Microsoft Surface were introduced.

Research & Concept

Being a 10-foot product it meant the primary way of interacting with the UI was through a remote, which normally comes with directional control button, ENTER button, and BACK button. However, with CyberLink being primarily an OEM company you can never predict how the end manufacturer or brand's remote will look like.

My researches for the design were set to define the design patterns and guidelines of all the next-generation 10-foot products for CyberLink; which involved looking at different touchscreen sizes, remote designs, surveying users' behaviors, and explore different ways of navigation for the UI.

Final Concepts

Being a media and entertainment center the design had to be delightful, full of colors, and entertaining -- kind of like the feelings you get going to a movie theatre -- which became the core concept for the designs.

The design for PowerCinema needs to be extensible for partners to add new features while providing a cutting-edge UI that has all the "wow" factor to entice partners and consumers. At a time when "glass" was abundant due to Windows Vista my goal was to design a UI that's still shiny, modern, but fresh -- thus the "bubble" concept was born.

The concept was simple, elegant, fun, and instantly stunned internal stakeholders. Concept videos I made below gives a glimpse of the UI in action.

NOTE* The concept was eventually dropped because the technology wasn't ready to fully implement the design requirements.
